An Adventure That Still Grips There are books you open and instantly feel transported to another time and place. Arthur Conan Doyle’s "The Lost World" is exactly that kind of book. You read it and it feels as though you’re walking alongside the characters into the depths of the South American jungle, where anything might be waiting around the corner — from the wondrous to the deadly. At the heart of the story is an expedition organized by Professor Challenger. Honestly, he’s quite the character — vivid, eccentric, hot-tempered. But it’s thanks to him that this whole venture comes alive. His arguments with the more measured Professor Summerlee are pure joy to read: two scientists, two temperaments, each utterly convinced that he’s the one who’s right. Not bad, too, is reporter Malone, who carries the responsibility of documenting everything. The journey itself is a true feast for adventure lovers. Just imagine: an isolated plateau where creatures from the prehistoric era have survived. Science comes face to face with what, by all logic, should have vanished long ago. What’s especially great is that the heroes don’t just “fight” or “survive” — they explore. Their actions radiate the excitement of true pioneers, and it’s contagious. Conan Doyle writes in such a way that you really feel like you’re there, in those far-off places. Without unnecessary heaviness — his language is simple, lively, and engaging in dialogue. Reading "The Lost World" today is a pleasure also because the book hasn’t lost its relevance. It reminds us that the world around us is still not fully explored, and that we, as humans, still carry within us that same thirst for discovery. Sure, we may not find dinosaurs on a plateau, but the ocean, for example, remains only partially studied — who knows what lies hidden in its depths? And you know what’s surprising? Conan Doyle, whom everyone is used to seeing as the “father of Sherlock Holmes,” shows himself here as a completely different kind of writer — not a detective storyteller, but a true literary adventurer. "The Lost World" is a classic, but not a boring one — it’s genuinely alive. If you want to feel the spirit of expeditions and at least mentally set off into the unknown, this book is a perfect choice. 8 out of 10
