Teise maailmasõja ajal Saksamaalt Pariisi põgenenud kirurg Ravic leiab seal uue elu ja armastuse. Kui selgub, et linna on saabunud ka teda kunagi julmalt piinanud Gestapo ohvitser, otsustab ta mehe tappa. Remarque'i tippteoses arenevad okupeeritud Pariisis ühe inimese ümber nii kirglik armulugu kui külmavereline kättemaksuplaan, romaani liikumapanevaks jõuks on aga siiski autorile omane ja tema loomingut läbiv humanism.
