Είπε με τη βραχνή ψιθυριστή φωνή του:
«Άκουσα πως κήρυξες πόλεμο στην Πόιζονβιλ».
«Μην κατηγορείς εμένα. Έχω έναν πελάτη που θέλει να φρεσκάρει το μέρος».
«Ήθελε πράγματι, αλλά δεν σημαίνει πως το θέλει ακόμη. Γιατί δεν τα παρατάς;»
Έβγαλα λόγο: «Δεν μ' αρέσει ο τρόπος που με αντιμετώπισε η Πόιζονβιλ. Τώρα μου δίνεται μια ευκαιρία να πατσίσω. Εσείς τα βρήκατε ξανά μεταξύ σας, περασμένα ξεχασμένα. Και θέλετε να μείνετε μόνοι σας. Αν με είχατε αφήσει κι εμένα μόνο μου, τώρα θα ήμουν στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο. Αλλά δεν το κάνατε. [...] Η Πόιζονβιλ είναι ώριμη για θερισμό. Μ' αρέσει ο θερισμός».
Ένας ντετέκτιβ καταφθάνει στην Πέρσονβιλ, ή αλλιώς Πόιζονβιλ, μια άσχημη βιομηχανική πόλη, για να συναντήσει έναν πελάτη, τον Ντόναλντ Ουίλσον. Το ραντεβού αυτό δεν θα πραγματοποιηθεί ποτέ αφού ο Ντόναλντ Ουίλσον δολοφονείται το ίδιο βράδυ. Ο ντετέκτιβ του Ηπειρωτικού Γραφείου Ερευνών όμως δεν θα εγκαταλείψει την υπόθεση, θα παραμείνει για να τιμωρήσει τους ενόχους - αν και αυτό σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να καταλάβει ολόκληρη την πόλη.
