This is the granddaddy of all alien invasion stories, first published
by H.G. Wells in 1898. The novel begins ominously, as the lone voice
of a narrator tells readers that "No one would have believed in the
last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being
watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's..."
Things then progress from a series of seemingly mundane reports about
odd atmospheric disturbances taking place on Mars to the arrival of
Martians just outside of London. At first the Martians seem
laughable, hardly able to move in Earth's comparatively heavy gravity
even enough to raise themselves out of the pit created when their
spaceship landed. But soon the Martians reveal their true nature as
death machines 100-feet tall rise up from the pit and begin laying
waste to the surrounding land. Wells quickly moves the story from the
countryside to the evacuation of London itself and the loss of all
hope as England's military suffers defeat after defeat. With horror
his narrator describes how the Martians suck the blood from living
humans for sustenance, and how it's clear that man is not being
conquered so much a corralled.

The birth of the alien Invasion genre I read The War of the Worlds when I was a kid. It seems to me that many people had a similar story. One of the adults advises you to read an interesting book (in my case, it was my father), and then after years and even decades you understand the logical chain. What is it about? Everything is simple. H. G. Wells and his novel about the Martian invasion of Earth was probably the first work of its kind. The novel has become iconic, famous and revered. He initiated a whole genre in books and cinema. For this reason, it is recommended from generation to generation and thereby instill a love for such things. It is read mainly in childhood, remembered with warm impressions, becomes a favorite work, and later ones already fade slightly against the background of Wells classics. And the picture repeats itself quite well when you already start advising your children to read this book (I will definitely do it). I love this book. One of the vivid childhood memories is when you read page after page and imagine with horror a similar picture of an invasion when people cannot fight back, plunging into the chaos of events. The book reads surprisingly quickly and easily, despite the fact that it was created more than a century ago. The author perfectly demonstrates the experiences of people, their psychological state, the nerve of the whole story. Huge terrifying machines still appear to me as the best alien ships/guns. And it was so interesting to see how the creators of the film adaptations see them. I like the descriptions of events in London, different places, everything is detailed and so interesting that you yourself seem to find yourself there among these poor people who are being attacked by tyrants. The author perfectly conveys horror, immerses in it. I still remember that, breaking away (reluctantly) from reading, I suddenly realized that I was not there, it was just a book, everything was calm and quiet around. Is this not a sign of a magnificent atmospheric work? Wells's novel is imbued with the picture that humanity, arrogant in its superiority, may actually turn out to be just an ordinary species that can be enslaved, used, as we do with animals and nature in general. In the work we meet both desperate and fallen people, as well as those who are noble and endure hard times with dignity. I have a feeling that even after more than a hundred years, if a similar situation happens, humanity will behave in a similar way. The world of people does not change. Actions, thoughts, and mindset are all the same as in Wells' novel. "The War of the Worlds" is an excellent work, which became the founder of a whole trend in science fiction, as, indeed, many other works of the author. This is a necessary book for everyone to read, and it will make you look at the role of man in the universe. 10 out of 10
