Max Payne is a man with nothing to lose in the violent, cold urban night. A fugitive undercover cop framed for murder, hunted by cops and the mob, Max is a man with his back against the wall, fighting a battle he cannot hope to win. Max Payne is a relentless story-driven game about a man on the edge, fighting to clear his name while struggling to uncover the truth about his slain family amongst a myriad of plot-twists and twisted thugs in the gritty bowels of New York during the century's worst blizzard. The groundbreaking original cinematic action-shooter, Max Payne introduced the concept of Bullet Time in videogames. Through its stylish slow-motion gunplay combined with a dark and twisted story, Max Payne redefined the action-shooter genre.

In December 2001, as New York City is enduring the tail end of the worst snow blizzard in the history of the city, Max Payne, a renegade DEA agent and former NYPD detective, is standing at the top of a skyscraper with a sniper rifle in his hands, smiling, as police units arrive on the scene to arrest him. He then experiences flashbacks from three years ago and the last two days he experienced. Three years earlier, on August 22nd 1998, Max was working as a regular NYPD detective, having just finished his day's work. His longtime friend and DEA agent, Alex Balder, invites him to transfer into the DEA, but Max declines the offer, wanting to focus on his full-time life with his wife, Michelle, and their newborn daughter, Rose. As he returns to his house in New Jersey, he finds that a trio of junkies had broken into his house, all addicted on a brand new designer drug, Valkyr. Max receives a call from a mysterious woman who seems pleased at the trouble in the house and refuses to call for help. Max rushes to aid his family and kill the junkies, but is too late as he finds his wife shot dead, and his daughter slaughtered. After his family's funeral, Payne accepts Alex's offer, and transfers to the DEA at his own request to stop the spreading of the drugs.

A revolution in the genre of action shooters "Max Payne" has so many memories and associations at once. This masterpiece of cinematography in computer games and a miracle of plot development was released in 2001 and rightfully became one of the most striking games of its time, giving an incredible atmosphere and an exciting plot. This is not just an action shooter - it's a dark, noir story about police officer Max Payne, whose life collapses in one moment after the murder of his family. The game offers the player an immersion into the personal tragedy of the main character, which makes the story truly emotional and memorable. The game's plot unfolds like a classic noir thriller with elements of mystery, betrayal and revenge. Max Payne, driven by a thirst for justice and retribution, faces the underworld of New York, plunging deeper into the conspiracies that keep the city at bay. The story is presented through stylish comic inserts and is full of Max's inner monologues (it seems to me that a seasoned bestselling book writer can envy the eloquence and vocabulary of the main character), which creates an atmosphere of a gloomy and hopeless world. This approach, coupled with the deeply written characters, makes the plot truly exciting. This is a story about revenge and grief, about how grief can transform a person. The plot of the game makes you feel his pain, loneliness and thirst for justice. For me personally, this story turned out to be not just an adventure, but something much more. She made me empathize with the hero at every step, in every action and decision. Going through the hell Max plunges into after the murder of his family, it's hard to remain indifferent. One of the main innovations of Max Payne was the combat system using the so—called "bullet time" - time dilation during shootouts. This innovation allowed players to feel almost invulnerable and perform dizzying acrobatic stunts in slow motion (thanks to the Matrix). The ability to dodge bullets by doing somersaults and jumps with the activation of "bullet time" added incredible cinematography and style to the combat process, which was not previously seen in games. The gameplay also didn't disappoint. Vivid and intense shootouts alternate with exploring the dark corners of New York City filled with criminals and drug addicts. Each mission is thought out to the smallest detail and offers the player unique combat scenarios, where the proper use of time dilation is often the key to victory. This was something revolutionary for 2001, and it was this innovation that made Max Payne a truly iconic project. "Max Payne" is not just a game, but a whole world that you want to immerse yourself in over and over again. Its dark plot, unique combat system and revolutionary gameplay have made the game a cult classic that still remains relevant. Max Payne is not just a hero with a gun, but a man driven by a personal tragedy. It is this connection between the character and the player that makes the game unique. Every shootout, every enemy in Max's path is perceived through the prism of his personal purgatory, into which he drove himself, and this only increases the immersion. "Max Payne" became for me not just a game, but a personal experience, thanks to its incredible atmosphere, gameplay and storyline, which really touched me. 9 out of 10
