During the Nara period, a young man named Tsuchimaro, who lives on the outskirts of a village, and a servant girl named Saname fall in love. However, Tsuchimaro is sent to imprisonment during the construction of the Great Buddha and they are separated. Saname, who followed him, became the wife of Kuninaka no Kimimaro, who was in charge of the construction of the Great Buddha. During her imprisonment, Saname was captured and poured into the Great Buddha with hot copper in front of Tsuchimaro, who was watching, and at that moment she shouted "Iara".
Later, in the Kamakura period, Azuchi-Momoyama period, Edo period, and the present day, a man with the face of Kimimaro himself appears, seeking the mystery of the word Iara and searching for the woman.
Note: Volume 3-6 of the collected volumes do not contain the main story of Iara but rather a series of one-shots under the Ishoku Tanpen (異色短編) series
