An operation that could change history
Nazi Germany. Every person will have one or another thought when he hears the mention of a long-defunct system. A black page, no, probably several black volumes of our human history, when the whole world shuddered and saw all the horrors that a man could think of, who imagined himself to be a being that stands above others. Adolf Hitler went to his triumph for many years, gaining large-scale support, but also making many enemies. Someone praised his ideas, was in league with him. But there were also those Germans who could not accept the truth being propagated. And although there have been many attempts on Hitler's life in almost 15 years, Operation Valkyrie is one of the most famous attempts to kill the personification of death and fear named Hitler.
Tom Cruise tries on the image of the famous officer Klaus von Stauffenberg, who was destined to play the role of the most famous of the conspirators on July 20, 1944, when the attempt on the Fuhrer actually took place. An interesting and, it seems, unusual role for a famous Hollywood actor, whom the viewer is used to seeing mainly in action films or dramas, but not in the role of a real person, and even one of the conspirators against the Nazi regime in Germany.
The film shows the most significant events related to the conspiracy against the current head of Germany. For the first half of the film, a competent script, an excellent cast and high-quality work by the director immerses us in the near-Hitler world. The second half of the picture is devoted to the very famous operation "Valkyrie". And of course, I am sure that every viewer necessarily knows that the assassination attempt will be unsuccessful, because we all remember that Hitler did not die in July 1944, but did it almost a year later. However, the story rises to such a level of intensity on the screen that you believe to the last that everything is about to work out. I still remember how in the cinema, on the most important scenes, I clutched the armrests of a comfortable chair and, it seems, whispered to myself: "Well, please, let them succeed in killing Hitler." Is this not an indicator of a high-quality film, where an atmosphere is created that completely immerses you in this most interesting story.
I really liked how the pace of the narration increases after the assassination attempt. Here, the audience is shown, with due degree of necessity, the "Valkyrie" itself, when, although with a creak, certain actions begin that should take place in the event of Hitler's demise. The tension still continues to grow, but soon everything falls apart, otherwise it could not have been, as we know from history.
I still remember how one of the heroes picks up the phone, from where a man says in Hitler's voice: Major Roemer's face changes, he looks at Goebbels, what is standing in front of him and who he came to arrest, and he realizes that he is talking to Hitler himself. And here everything becomes clear. The plan fell apart, the attempt was unsuccessful.
The film was made very well. It was created, in my opinion, as a political thriller, which had an excellent historical basis, which did not even have to be invented. The main thing was to show the whole story correctly, to make the right accents, which director Bryan Singer undoubtedly succeeded in doing. The author has shown that he can not only tell high-quality stories about mutants in "X-Men", but also adequately film such an important page of history.
In addition to a strong script and good direction, the film is ready to boast a lot of strong names of the cast, among which Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Caris van Houten, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, Thomas Kretschman stand out.
"Operation Valkyrie" is a worthy art project that successfully adapts one of the most interesting pages of world history, when its wheel could well have turned in a different direction, giving rise to another reality. And although in 1944 much was already predetermined in the defeat of Nazi Germany, Hitler's death could well have stopped the bloody war and saved a lot of lives. The film also demonstrates that even in a country like Nazi Germany, many did not support the ruling regime, which led the country into the abyss, depriving tens of millions of people of their future. There were also those who found the courage to admit the criminality of the actions of the authorities, to go against it, to try to fix it, even at the cost of their lives. Such people, their examples are needed at all times.
