Closer to heaven Wings is a special project. The 1927 film became the first Oscar winner as the best film. An excellent blockbuster at that time with an impressive budget of $ 2 million gave the audience a 2.5-hour story. The story of war, the story of love, the story of friendship. The plot of the picture becomes a landmark event — the First World War, which the United States entered in 1917. Against this background, the viewer will be able to trace the sensual story of young friends Jack and David, and the love that each of them feels for a girl named Sylvia. She made her choice in favor of David. Also, the story of another girl, Mary, who is in love with Jack, becomes no less interesting. The maelstrom of events spins each of them, and life shows what drama the history of the quartet can be saturated with. Charles "Buddy" Rogers, Clara Bow, Richard Arlen and Jobina Ralston handled their roles perfectly. The film is specific for the modern viewer. He is almost a hundred years old. However, the production still looks quite decent today. The Academy Award for Best Special Effects was a demonstration of this. The impressive budget of the picture ($ 2 million was a lot of money back then) demonstrates itself on the screen. This is a kind of mastodon of its time, comparable, probably, to some modern "Avatar" or "Pearl Harbor". The latter, by the way, is somewhat similar in plot to "Wings". Battle scenes, lots of explosions, shootouts — all at a high level. The aerial scenes were shot perfectly, almost every such scene raised a question in my mind about how it was done in those distant years. However, the story that the creators show us will soon prevail over technical interest, and I, as a viewer, completely immerse myself in the narrative. The acting is decent. Of course, all the features of cinema of those years are present here, when the actors look at each other too expressively, they play with their facial expressions against the background of a silent narrative, but in the frame it all looks good. "Wings" is without a doubt a landmark movie for its time. Something new, large-scale and memorable. The film is not without flaws. Among these are some questions about the storyline, where the characters are sometimes overly pretentious and even illogical. Among these, the falseness of the heroes' demonstration of their heroism is too clearly evident. However, I attribute all this to the still young cinema, which is still learning how to present the best pictures to the world. In any case, the film remains a landmark of its time, which remains in history as the first picture to win an Oscar in the Best Film category. 8 out of 10
