Is Bond's new face successful? Everyone decides for himself
Sean Connery is tired of playing James Bond. He starred in five films of the franchise, and work on the last project finally led the actor to the idea that it was time to stop participating in this project. The relationship with the producers was complicated, and the saga itself seemed to require a new vector in the development of Bond.
The role was given to a little-known actor George Lazenby. In one documentary, he told how he literally dreamed of this role, wanted to become James Bond, inspired by Connery's work. Lazenby was very persistent when he came to audition for the role, he said that he wanted to become the new Bond. They appreciated the capabilities of the actor, who was popular due to his work in advertising and being a model, but the guy had no experience in cinema. However, he still got the role.
The picture itself is noticeably different in its setting, spirit, vector. The main difference, of course, is in the actor. It doesn't escape anyone. This is a completely different Bond. Lazenby bears little resemblance to a notorious spy, he has a kind face and it is hard to believe that he is able to make decisions with lightning speed, kill people, defend his country in numerous battles. However, closer to the middle of the film, you dismiss these arguments in your head and completely immerse yourself in what is happening on the screen, already in principle taking the new Bond for Bond. And this is the merit of the Australian Lazenby, in my opinion. He copes with the tasks set, showing the viewer an updated agent 007.
The film is literally saturated with dramatic notes, shows us the hero from a completely different side. It's not for nothing that "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is often called the most romantic Bond film. The British agent decides that he has had enough and it's time to retire, but closer to the end of the film, the viewer is convinced that this is hardly possible.
The film is necessarily filled with action, like all pictures about an agent with two zeros. The hero will visit the most picturesque and unusual places. The geography of filming was extensive: Switzerland, Great Britain, Portugal. The film eventually became a box office success, and over time, the audience's loyalty to the picture increased more and more. After all, in this film, the famous spy was made more human with his tragedies and victories, which brought him closer to ordinary people.
Bond faces his main enemy Blofeld, who is also good and colorful. Numerous fights, chases, shootouts are necessarily present here, dragging the viewer and inevitably bringing the story closer to the finale. And here Lazenby is already fully revealed as a familiar Bond. James Bond. He is deadly and dangerous. And the audience accepts it. In my opinion, one film for actor George Lazenby was catastrophically not enough to show us his interpretation of Bond. On the other hand, perhaps this is the only story in his performance that has become so good and necessarily memorable.
A colorful picture, great music, driving action and a great open ending, which seemed to invite us to wait for the sequel. Alas, Lazenby in the role of James was no longer seen by the audience. But the movie turned out great. James Bond has become fresher, more human, as if he had discovered his other side to the world. The side of a person who is capable of loving and regretting.
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is a strong spy thriller with excellent elements of drama, a film that you definitely want to review neither once nor twice. This page in the history of Bond will forever remain one of the most significant. The hero will grow up, be sure to win and of course will not leave you indifferent.
