In the year 1890, promoter Steven Steel announces the upcoming Steel Ball Run, an unprecedented horse race across the American continent from San Diego to New York. Johnny Joestar, a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down, meets a mysterious man named Gyro Zeppeli as the latter signs up for the race. Finding hope in the power of Gyro's weapons, Johnny follows him into the race's hectic first stage.
