I started this show because I was looking for a funny sitcom that I could just watch while doing other stuff. You know, the kind of show where you can shut your brain off and not give it much thought. You don’t really get invested in the plot or the characters. And that’s pretty much what I got. Overall, the show wasn’t bad and it was a good way to pass the time. It wasn’t boring, nor was it particularly entertaining. I only laughed a handful of times over 5 seasons so it wasn’t peak comedy, either. I do have a few thoughts, though. There was one episode that introduced a non-binary they/them. This character appeared once for like 3 minutes and was never mentioned or brought up again. This leads me to believe that it was added to the show JUST to get brownie points with the LGBT crowd and be considered an “inclusive show.” It was clearly forced and so unnecessary. Shannon is EASILY the most annoying character in the entire show. She tries WAY too hard to be some quirky, unique girl but it’s just super fucking cringe and annoying. She’s also really selfish. She forced Stacy into having a party she did NOT want for her birthday just to make herself feel better about her “shitty” life. A life, mind you, where she has a stable, well paying job, a good loyal boyfriend that clearly loves her, plus two cats. Stop fucking whining, your life is not that bad just because you’re not where you wanted to be. Turning an employee’s birthday party into your own pity party is just… ew. The last half of this show feels like it was made to represent the current day struggles between the sensible older folk and the sensitive younger folk. The parents are just living their lives and don’t get offended by small shit. The kids, though? They get offended SO easily. They go on about white privilege, white guilt, cultural appropriation, racism, etc. All the buzzwords that the woke like to use to be seen as victims. Then there’s the age old, “It’s okay for US to do x thing but YOU can’t do x thing because you’re WHITE!” Total bullshit. The show is clearly pushing an agenda here. This show started strong and had potential but, like I said, the second half just felt completely pointless and loaded with hot topics that normal, sane people do not want to see in their damn sitcom. People watch shows like this to escape the hellscape that is reality right now. The only highlights of this show are the parents, Kimchi and Stacy. They feel like REAL people, not just characters reading a script. And the character growth of Kimchi? Truly impressive. All the other characters do not feel real AT ALL. They’re like caricatures, just actors reading poorly written lines. They’re not funny. They’re not entertaining. And they’re certainly not loveable. Speaking of token issues… Throughout this entire show, there has been ZERO indication that Janet likes girls and she even reacted negatively when her female roommate kissed her. So, please explain how, all of a sudden, she’s making out with her female friend in her bedroom?? Like, if they had written her properly and shown us struggling with her sexuality or given us an indication that she leaned toward girls, that’s one thing. But to just suddenly make her gay?? It’s like the writers just came into work one day and were like, “We need better ratings, lets add more LGBT! Yes, let’s make Janet a lesbian! People love lesbians!” Because remember guys, we gotta be inclusive and add LGBT characters to all our media now. Not because we care about gay people, but because we have a quota to fill and so we don’t get canceled for not being inclusive enough. Finally, the entire show was set up for Jung and Shannon as this “meant to be” power couple that would get together despite all the odds. We never witnessed anything bad between them. I mean, sure, they fought sometimes and had disagreements, as normal couples do, but nothing to indicate that they weren’t in love and wanted to break up. Now, on the very last episode, suddenly Shannon is unhappy with the relationship because she hates her life? I feel like they were trying to set up another season or maybe even a spin off focusing on just her, but this was such a trashy ending that made zero sense. They were perfectly fine then BAM - unnecessary drama. Seriously, were the writers drunk while writing this shit? The only way it could have been worse was if they ended it with the parents dying. I would have been pissed. Did I enjoy the show? I did. I didn’t love it, but I enjoyed it enough to finish watching. Though, I admit, I mostly only came back because Netflix is removing it and I have enough shit that I haven’t finished lol The first half of the show was strong. It was good and had a lot of potential. Then it just started rolling downhill and never stopped.
