Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing.

But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote... and more sinister.

And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

A great piece from the King of Horrors I happened to read "The Shining" much later than I saw the legendary Stanley Kubrick film. And to this day, when it comes to this novel by King, images and a low melody from the film still pop up in my head. However, the original source, in my opinion, allows you to get into the spirit of that terrible hotel where the events of the novel take place much better. The book describes an interesting story of the writer, his wife and young son, who, by the will of fate, find themselves in a snowy place where they will be cut off from the whole world for the whole winter and at the same time take care of the hotel, which hides a lot of secrets. The book is replete with many interesting moments, especially immersion in the consciousness of the main characters. King is a master at this. He always perfectly and competently prescribes the thoughts of the characters, the chains of logical reasoning that lead to certain actions of the characters. I consider such a vivid and detailed description to be a success, which allows us to thoroughly reveal the characters and show the reader their motivation. The novel is literally saturated with mysticism and horror. It is often difficult to distinguish between reality and the mystical afterlife. These things move into one another, but it is done so competently that sometimes you have to shake your head yourself to understand where you are now. The book takes over the reader's mind so much. The writer competently conveys to us the character of his father, Jack Torrence, who is a man with a lot of problems from childhood, inherited from his domineering father. He is a quiet alcoholic who is struggling to stop drinking, looking for inspiration in this new opportunity to create in an empty hotel. But he doesn't do well when the Overlook Hotel shows itself. This hotel appears as the rightful owner of itself, a certain person who will not tolerate uninvited guests. The hotel, which will definitely show what it is like, confuse, drive you crazy, achieve its goal in order to remain a local ruler. "Overlook" skillfully plays on the feelings of each character, literally drives Jack Torrence crazy. Even though the writer was an alcoholic and had problems with aggression. All this becomes the foundation for the hotel to play its role and turn a man into a madman who loses his mind and confuses reality with fiction. Danny's little boy's ability to "shine" is another complication in the piggy bank of what is happening. King seems to be deliberately putting together all the weaknesses of this family in order to eventually drive each of them into depression. The author does this very competently, immersing the reader in many secrets of the hotel, literally forcing him to be there. And even if you are reading a book in a warm summer room, you involuntarily feel that it is cold and snow around you, because you are mentally in the "Overlook". The main feature of the narrative, in my opinion, is not the various mystical events, of which the novel is full and for which you are ready. The main theme runs through the whole work, and it is the psychology of the characters that the author devotes most of his time to. I never tire of being surprised at how simple King's description is, but at the same time it is a difficult task to be able to so clearly show the experiences of the characters on paper, literally getting into their heads. The book is sure to please with its climax, where the degree of narration increases with each new page, and the reader tends to turn the page faster and faster to find out what will happen next. "Radiance" is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of darkness of human consciousness, to see the loneliness of the soul, the darkness that literally breaks in and makes a person a slave. 9 out of 10
