Ambition will fuel him.
Competition will drive him.
But power has its price.

It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined—every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute . . . and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

I was excited to read this book. I really liked the film when it came out (maybe just because of Rachel Zegler, who keeps me tied to my bisexuality), and after rereading the original trilogy last year, I felt like it was the moment. And I've been a little disappointed, mostly by the first part. I understand that it all works as a set-up, that there are a lot of new characters and a very different time on Panem to what we knew, and it has to introduce all of this from scratch, but i felt it too long, heavy-going and boring. I think that the games themselves do not have a lot of weight in the plot and they could have been told in less pages. In general, I would've taken out 50-100 pages. However, the second part, mostly the ending and epilogue still seem wonderful to me. I know there's a lot of people who didn't enjoy the ending, but for me it's the best this woman has written til now, I wouldn't change a word. I got a little bit stucked with the first half of the book, taking me almost two months to finish, and the second half I've devoured it in a week. I now want to watch the movie again and see if my opinion has changed
