As he continues showing me their incredible penthouse apartment, I have a terrible feeling about the woman behind closed doors. But I can't risk losing this job – not if I want to keep my darkest secret safe . . .

It's hard to find an employer who doesn't ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want. It's almost perfect. But I still haven't met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I'm sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I'm doing laundry. And one day I can't help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything...

That's when I make a promise. After all, I've done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe. Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It's simply a question of how far I'm willing to go...

I liked it better than the first book. I think the plot is more consistently written in this one, although it feels a little less inspired. It still maintains the best aspects of the previous book: an easy-to-read story, full of small twists, that will appeal to a broad audience not so used to reading. If you enjoyed the first book, you’ll probably enjoy this one just as much. It follows the same structure as the original, and that was one of its main virtues for me (although I hope it doesn’t get reused for a third time in the next entry). It tells one story up until around the halfway point, and just when you think it’s close to being resolved, a plot twist happens and you see the same events from another perspective. That new perspective helps you understand the twist and eventually leads you to the resolution of everything. That’s also where I found the biggest flaw, the ending is probably worse than the one in the first book (and I didn’t love that one either). It breaks one of the main rules that the antagonist’s plan depended on, and the only explanation is that they simply didn’t know about it. There’s also a new love interest for Millie, and he ends up having almost nothing to do with the plot at all. I hope he’s used in some way in the next book. As I write this, I’m starting to doubt whether I really liked it better than the first one. It’s better written overall, but the plot has major flaws and feels less innovative.
